Closed Captioning: The Nutcracker: (Lola Buckley)
The next piece was originally composed by Tchaikovsky for full orchestra to accompany a 2 act
ballet. The version we are playing tonight was arranged by Brian Balmages for younger players
and it includes two of the most famous themes: the overture and the trepak. We hope you enjoy
our performance of the seasonal classic, The Nutcracker
Slidin’ the Blues (Julia VanWagner)
Slidin’ the Blues is an upbeat, jazzy piece that features the trombone section. You will hear
them play many varieties of glissandi which is when you slide from one note to the next without
articulating in between. This is a very common gesture for the trombone and is used in many
styles of music. You will also hear the bass line in the clarinet section, and the sounds of a
drumset by the members of the percussion section. Please enjoy our performance of Slidin’ the
Blues.
Elves R Us (Oliver Martin)
A clever new twist is added to this holiday classic! Based on the timeless seasonal favorite,
Toyland, the sounds of Christmas elves hard at work adds to the charm and appeal. The use of
additional percussion instruments contributes to the fun sounds of a busy toy factory. This
piece uses interesting harmonies and passes the melody around to each section of the band.
We hope you enjoy our performance of Elves R Us!
The Tempest (Lindy Betrus)
This exciting work is a perfect way to end a concert! The brass has a strong, rugged sound
underneath rhythmic woodwind ostinatos, and the piece easily comes together to display all the
fury of a tempest! This is by far the most difficult piece we have worked on this year, but it has
become a favorite of the band. Thank you for coming tonight and supporting the Potsdam
music program, and happy holidays!
